photostatic camera

A type of copying camera in which the object is placed on a horizontal easel and photographed by a horizontal camera above the easel through a 90° reversing prism. The image is recorded on a roll of sensitized paper held in a magazine at the back of the camera. Some photostatic machines also have internal arrangements for processing the paper image. This type of copying arrangement is now giving way to Xerox and other electrographic processes that yield a direct positive copy without a need to wet the paper.
