SRI International has developed an architecture that allows tunable laser technology to be deployed in metropolitan area networks. Chameleon Telecom technology provides a housing for 10 tunable, self-calibrating lasers within a module that is approximately the size of a matchbook, measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.3 in. The 10-channel module has a microprocessor that provides active control, spectral utilization as low as 1-GHz channel spacing and frequency stability better than ±0.01 GHz. The company says its built-in, ultrastable absolute frequency reference makes the device self-calibrating and highly reliable. The module, which can be constructed using off-the-shelf components, incorporates internal wavelength stabilization and referencing mechanisms. It can be integrated into dense WDM networks for maximizing fiber optic capacity.
