Nichia Corp. has introduced the NLHV3000 series of violet laser diodes, which offer a 405-nm peak wavelength and 30-mW maximum optical power output. These lasers enable data storage from 4.7 to more than 20 GB, allowing 10 h of recorded time on each DVD, as opposed to the 2-h limit of red laser diodes. This series uses the company's patented InGaN semiconductor technology. The wavelength of the violet laser is approximately two-thirds the 650-nm wavelength of red laser diodes.
