Stoichiometric LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 single crystals grown by Oxide Corp. have applications in optical storage, telecommunications and frequency doubling with parametric conversion. Unlike congruently grown crystals, which are usually deficient in lithium, the materials maintain a lithium-to-niobium ratio of 50:59, reducing the defect density by two orders of magnitude. This results in larger nonlinear and electro-optic coefficients, improved transparency in the UV, increased resistance to optical damage and, for nonlinear and parametric processes, reduction in the poling field by factors of five to 10.
