Coherent Inc.'s Laser Processing Center launches a soldering technique that uses high-power diode lasers to solder gold-tin telecommunications fibers to gold-plated substrates. The system's engine is a 40-W near-IR fiber array package with a standard 1:1 optics imaging accessory. The laser diodes can be interchanged at different wavelengths to support a variety of applications. Users can control the operating temperature, the current of the diode laser and the mode of operation via the front panel or computer-controlled RS-232 interface. The company says this process solders material in 2 s without any bulk preheating, thus eliminating oxidation problems.
