Civcom Inc. has introduced the Free-X 2 x 2 multifunction all-optical switch, available in fast and ultrafast versions, with integrated variable optical attenuator and multicast capabilities. Based on the company's proprietary free-space-propagation SFS technology and on polarization encoding of optical signals, the switch enables polarization-independent nonblocking switching in a compact package. The company says that, because it contains no moving parts, the switch is stable and reliable and exhibits low loss, reducing the need for amplifiers. Applications include advanced protection schemes, reconfigurable optical add-drop modules and provisioning.
