Ultrabright high-power laser diodes from Frankfurt Laser Co. produce 4 and 6 W from a 100-µm emitter and offer wavelengths that match the absorption spectrum of rare-earth ions: 808 nm for neodymium, 945 and 980 nm for erbium, and 915, 965 and 975 nm for ytterbium. The company says that its line of laser diodes delivers more than 40 and 60 mW/µm of the emitting aperture, while the typical brightness of the better-performing commercial laser diodes is roughly 20 mW/µm of aperture. The devices, which can be purchased on various types of open submounts, show reliable CW performance over 10,000 h at room temperature and are available in OEM or sample quantities.
