Applications for Lightwaves2020 Inc.'s liquid-crystal-based polarization controller include DWDM mux/demux, multichannel optical add/drop modules, protection switch polarization mode dispersion compensators, and polarization generators, multiplexers and scramblers. Sealed in a 10-pin dual-in-line package measuring 65 X 8 X 7.5 mm (including the strain-relief boots), the device comprises four liquid crystal retarders, with their fast optical axes oriented at 0° or 45°, which act as variable wave plates to change the arbitrary incoming state of polarization to the desired output one. Polarization control is achieved by changing the voltages applied to each retarder.
