Nitto Denko Corp. has developed a thermosetting polymer with a refractive index of 1.76. The company expects the material to be useful as an element coating for LEDs, as antireflective films for display devices and as microlenses for CCDs. The advantages of this material lie in its luminance and photosensitivity, made possible by its high refractive index, and in its processing and thermal resistance properties. The polymer film or powder can be thermally molded into a material of various shapes. The company says that, by adding other substances, such as titania, zirconia or other metal-oxide nanoparticles, a material with an even higher refractive index can be produced.
