A 470-nm picosecond pulsed diode laser has been announced by PicoQuant GmbH. It provides pulse durations down to 90 ps at a lower cost than many mode-locked lasers, and it can serve as a solid-state alternative to argon-ion devices. The company says that the availability of the aquamarine wavelength will support new applications in bioanalysis, biochemistry, genetics, optical storage, semiconductor characterization and quality control. The laser is suitable for exciting fluorescent proteins and dyes such as rhodamine, fluorescein, acridine orange and their derivatives. The laser head is compatible with the company's one-channel PDL 800-B and its multichannel PDL 808 diode laser drivers, which run at a frequency of up to 40 MHz. Its collimator optics can be fitted with optical fibers.
