Alphalas GmbH has extended its UPD series ultrafast photodetectors to cover the spectral range from 190 to 1800 nm. They can be powered by a battery or an external power supply and are suitable for light-pulse-form and pulse-duration measurements, and for precise synchronization. Rise time for the UPD-40 IR2 is below 40 ps, with 90% quantum efficiency and a sensitive area of 0.003 mm2. The company says that the PIN photodiodes are compact and offer sensitivity that is two orders of magnitude larger in the near-IR than that of vacuum photodiodes.
