The CoolSnapK4 from Photometrics is a CCD camera system for full field-of-view fluorescence microscopy. It has a 2048 × 2048-element active array with 7.4 × 7.4-µm pixel pitch, and low-noise electronics that deliver 12-bit images at 20 MHz. The spatial resolution of the detector is matched to that of optical microscopes, eliminating the need for intermediate demagnifying optics. A progressive-scan, interline-transfer CCD from Kodak, with microlenses, provides good sensitivity, and TE cooling down to –25 °C minimizes dark current noise. The system provides 4096 levels of gray-scale data for quantitative analysis, and the company says that its camera head, high-speed PCI card and software can be quickly installed.
