SPECTROFLUOROMETER For low-intensity fluorescence applications in the 380- to 1050-nm range, Ocean Optics Inc. has released the USB2000-FLG spectrofluorometer, a USB-interface miniature fiber optic spectrometer that can detect picomolar-range concentrations of fluorophores from surfaces and in liquids and powders. Silver-coated mirrors in the spectrometer optical bench, manufactured using proprietary thin-film technology, absorb UV light, increase reflectance and improve sensitivity. A time-gated mode delays the start of spectral data acquisition by 5 to 500 µs after the excitation source is turned off, which is useful for fluorophores with long fluorescence lifetimes, such as lanthanides and photoluminescent materials.
