WAVE PLATES Sapphire wave plates that extend the polarization control of medical and industrial lasers into the infrared have been unveiled by Meller Optics Inc. Available in 10- to 30-mm-diameter sizes, in λ/2 and λ/4 and in multiple- and zero-order configurations, they can be used with lasers that transmit from 2.8 to 4.7 µm. They feature 10-5 scratch-dig surface quality and ≤1 arc sec parallelism and come with v-coat or broadband AR coatings at ≤0.25% R per surface. They provide λ/4 and λ/2 retardation, with a tolerance of >l/300 at 0.632 µm, >/400 at 1.06 µm and >/1000 at 2.94 µm.
