GREEN LASER A 540-nm frequency-doubled green fiber laser system announced by Aculight Corp. outputs 60 W at a 10-MHz pulsed repetition rate. Based on an ytterbium-doped large-mode-area fiber amplifier, the system comprises a 1080-nm CW fiber oscillator, an amplitude modulator and a preamplifier that provides input pulses. The fiber is wound onto a mandril to provide high transverse-mode quality and polarization purity, and is pumped at the output end by free-space coupling optics. The output is directed into a pair of LBO crystals, with 10% electrical-to-optical efficiency. Applications include materials processing and military imaging.
