Infrared transmission fiber manufactured by CorActive High-Tech Inc. of Quebec City is an optical fiber that offers ultralow-loss, high-power transmission in the mid-IR wavelengths from 2 to 6 µm. It is flexible, mechanically robust, and bend- and polarization-insensitive. The company provides complete cable assemblies that handle in excess of 1 GW/cm2 of pulsed optical power density.
The mid-IR fiber exhibits attenuation on the order of 0.2 dB/m and high-quality beam integrity, with limited speckling or beam disruption during transmission. The company has entered into an exclusive agreement with the US Naval Research Laboratory to develop and manufacture the fiber for military applications.
Designed to enable low-cost, high-integrity infrared countermeasure systems for commercial and military aircraft, the fiber will act as the conduit between a high-energy laser source and a beam-directing unit. It also will lower the cost and increase the reliability of such systems for use in commercial airliners to counteract the risk from surface-to-air missiles.
Other uses include sensing, spectroscopy, infrared imaging and surgical applications.
The fiber has advanced the state of the art in mid-IR fiber transmission, and process enhancements that have substantially improved its characteristics will allow the chalcogenide fiber technology to be commercialized in high-energy applications.
