LuxxMaster VBG Volume Bragg Grating Volume Bragg grating elements that transform high-power laser diodes or diode bars into narrowband emitters have been designed by PD-LD Inc. of Pennington, N.J. The LuxxMaster VBG technology locks and narrows the diodes' emission to a precisely defined center wavelength and reduces sensitivity to changes in temperature.

The elements narrow linewidth by a factor of ~10, and both improve control of the center wavelength and reduce the temperature drift by a factor of ~30. In the company's comparison of commercial diodes with and without the VBG, the respective figures for these spectral characteristics were: linewidth, <0.3 nm and 3 to 6 nm; center wavelength control, ±0.1 and ±3 nm; and temperature drift, 0.01 and 0.3 nm/°C.

Applications for the LuxxMaster are pumping solid-state lasers, sensing, spectroscopy, chemical analysis and medicine. Produced by melting proprietary photorefractive glass, recording holographic volume Bragg gratings, polishing and dicing, the elements can be integrated easily and can be manufactured cost-effectively and in large volumes.
