DataLase A color-change process for high-speed printing of images using low-power laser light has been introduced by Sherwood Technology Ltd. of Cheshire, UK. DataLase is a patent-pending technology that can be used for coding and dating of products, for printing graphics and for security marking.

It is a white, opaque powder that also can be provided as a finished ink or coating or as a concentrate from which an ink or coating can be produced. It is available as a Masterbatch for plastic molding applications. Images that can be produced with the technology include human-readable text such as lot codes and expiration dates, bar codes, 2-D codes, and bold text, graphics and logos. The imaging capacity is dependent upon the density of the reactive pigment, so doping level and applied coat weight determine the results.

The benefits of DataLase include low emissions and elimination of production line consumables, compatibility with most substrates and conversion processes, faster line speeds, and better image resolution and marking. Also, legislative initiatives in the pharmaceutical industry require more specific variable data on prescribed medication and dosage for individual patients. The ability to encapsulate this technology within a laminate or beneath the surface of a clear film or label is an advantage.
