ROTARY CLEAVER The RC-1000 rotary cleaver has been announced by 3SAE Technologies Inc. The patented device, designed in collaboration with US Air Force Research Laboratories, is suitable for cleaving large-diameter optical fibers for medical, military, aerospace and telecommunications applications. It produces flat, clean, low-angle cleaves on optical fiber of any shape and from 125 to 950 µm in size. Multiple precision scribe points, whose location and depth are programmable, are distributed around the fiber, providing a local stress riser to reinforce the correct glass fracture direction. A fiber-shape sensor detects the outer diameter of the glass cladding and adjusts for optimal cleave patterns.
