New Scale Technologies Inc. has introduced the SQ-306, the newest version of its Squiggle ceramic piezomotor. Measuring 4 mm in diameter and 20 mm long, it is suitable for implantable medical devices, microfluidic pumps, night-vision systems, autofocus mechanisms for mobile phone cameras and nanotechnology tools for research. It also is available in a metal housing to drive miniature linear positioning stages. It achieves 250-nm position resolution over a 6-mm travel range, and its speed can be controlled from microns per second to more than 10 mm per second.
