ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS Ocean Optics has announced laser-induced breakdown spectrometer systems that provide real-time, high-resolution qualitative analysis of every element in solids, solutions and gases in less than 1 s. Their environmental applications include soil testing, agricultural runoff monitoring and plant tissue analysis. The company says that the systems' speed, noncontact sampling and minimal sample preparation improve upon traditional analysis techniques. Each scan yields a full spectral analysis from 200 to 980 nm, with optical resolution of 0.1 nm FWHM and sensitivity to parts per billion. The intuitive operating software includes a library of all elemental emission lines and allows tracking emission intensities over multiple scans and correlating the analysis routines.
