KEENE, N.H., Aug. 8 -- Precitech, a provider of ultraprecision machining products, has introduced the HydroRound hydrostatic rotary-bearing table, which it designed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The HydroRound features a self-compensating restrictor with what the company calls industry-leading accuracy and moment stiffness. It was designed for Precitech's Nanoform and Freeform systems to perform 3-axis-tool normal diamond turning and parallel grinding as well as high-performance 4- and 5-axis raster milling and grinding.

Using an uncompensated HydroRound Rotary B-axis, the following tests were performed on a 75-mm-diameter ElNi (electroless nickel) test piece with a 254-mm convex radius to prove the overall quality of the HydroRound configured to a standard 2-axis, Nanoform700 machine: 2-axis diamond turning (with B-axis locked down), -1.423-nm surface roughness; 2-axis diamond turning (with B-axis active), -1.553-nm surface roughness; tool normal diamond turning, -1.426-nm surface roughness.

Precitech said part-cutting performance was not affected by integrating an additional axis to the Nanoform 700 platform. Users can incorporate an additional axis for advanced capability without compromising part performance.
