New Applications in Plumbing Fixtures
CARROLLTON, Texas, Aug. 9 -- Optek Technology, a manufacturer of sensors using infrared, visible, magnetic and fiber optic technologies with applications in office machines, industrial equipment, encoders, automotive electronics, military and medical diagnostic equipment, has developed a packaged optical proximity sensor capable of detecting the presence or absence of objects from 0.04 to over 24 in. The sensor is especially suited for high-volume commercial applications, such as automatic plumbing fixtures.

Designated the OPB720 Series, the reflective sensor enables design engineers to incorporate optoelectronic sensing capability into commercial plumbing fixtures for lower cost than traditional proximity sensors. It provides commercial plumbing system designers with an economical means to implement non-contact, automatic control of water faucets, soap dispensers, toilets and other bathroom fixtures.
According to the company, the OPB720's flexibility enables plumbing design engineers to use the same basic device for short-range sensing, such as for automatic faucet controls or soap dispensers where the detection distance is 1 to 2 in.; as well as for automatic toilets and urinals with a detection distance requirement up to 24 in.
The OPB720 Series proximity sensor consists of a synchronized infrared LED and photosensor, packaged in a miniature plastic housing that measures 1.1 in. x 0.68 in. x 0.33 in. It features collector DC current of 50 mA, with power dissipation at 300 mW. The sensor can switch from high level with no reflection target to low level with reflection.
Designed for easy mounting, the OPB720 features an opaque plastic housing that provides ambient light reduction of <100 K lux for operation in most commercial lavatory environments. Various preset reflective distances, cable length and termination options are available with custom capability to meet application specific requirements.
Other applications for the OPB720 Series proximity sensor include conveyor belt package recognition, automatic sensors for "people mover" moving sidewalks and escalators, near-focus security sensors, product dispensing systems and vending machine drop sensors.
