Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH has combined its LSM 510 Meta and LSM 5 Live confocal laser scanning microscopes to form the LSM 5 Duo for fast line scanning, ultraprecise point scanning, and spectral and nonlinear imaging. All functions are controlled by the same software and real-time electronics and share the same high-power lasers and microscope. Dynamic processes in the kilohertz range can be observed, and the AchroGate beamsplitter and high-quantum-efficiency CCD line detector provide increased sensitivity. Two independent scanner groups offer flexibility in optical sample micromanipulation for applications using FRAP or photoactivatable and -convertible variants of fluorescent proteins. Real-time electronics and computing handle gigabytes of data.
