ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPE Veeco Instruments Inc. has launched the BioScope II atomic force microscope. It delivers a Z-scan range of >15 μm and an X-Y range of >150 μm to facilitate advanced bioscience research. Applications include spatial identification of protein molecules and cellular structures, time-lapse live-cell imaging, investigation of cell response to mechanical stimulation and in situ pharmacological studies of live cells. A motorized X-Y stage enables precise sample positioning over a 10 X 10-mm range. The system provides top-down optical access for compatibility with most condensers with numerical apertures of up to 0.55. The 850-nm deflection laser reduces optical interference and improves compatibility with fluorescence techniques. A soft-sealed environmental/perfusion chamber and sample heater are optional.
