62.5-µm HCS Fiber

AVON, Conn., Feb. 9, 2006 -- Fiber optic product manufacturer OFS Specialty Photonics (formerly the Optical Fiber Solutions div. of Lucent Technologies Inc.) has added its patented hard-clad silica (HCS) coating to a 62.5-µm core diameter fiber, and the result is a product that offers bandwidth greater than 160 MHz-km at 850 nm for faster, more efficient interconnections than typical single-mode or graded-index fibers.

The HCS coating provides higher tensile strength and greater resistance to moisture than either conventional coatings or other 62.5-µm fibers. Proof testing to 150 kpsi further ensures a strong, durable, flexible fiber, ready for conditions on the factory floor. “These coated and ETFE-buffered, multimode graded-index fibers are ideally suited for high-bandwidth communication in rugged industrial environments,” said Industrial Market Manager Robert Dauphinais.

Thanks to the hard polymer, HCS fiber is easy to crimp, allowing connectors to be installed directly onto the cladding. The crimp-and-cleave process uses a hand crimp tool and then a proprietary cleave tool to cut the fiber in the field instead of by more complex epoxy/polish methods. Crimp-and-cleave produces a high-quality endface with a completely mechanical process, minimizing the impact of operator error.
