LLC has expanded its Luxeon family of high-power LEDs with the introduction of the Luxeon K2 versions, which offer white-light output of 140 lm or more. Operating junction temperature is 185 °C, allowing engineers to deliver more light using existing thermal designs by driving the LEDs at higher currents. This feature also makes it possible to reduce or eliminate heat sink requirements. Thermal resistance is 9 °C/W, and the drive current is 1500 mA. Moisture tolerance has a JEDEC level 2a rating, enabling four weeks of unsealed factory floor life prior to preconditioning. Other advantages include surface mount technology, lead-free packaging and assembly, and new alignment features and datum reference points that facilitate precision assembly for automotive applications.
