Ultrafast titanium:sapphire laser amplifier technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with the development of reliable systems that incorporate cryogenic cooling of the laser medium. This has led to nearly an order-of-magnitude increase in average power from these systems, without compromise, in other beam parameters such as pulse duration or beam quality, and with unprecedented flexibility in the output parameters.

KMLabs has been the leader in commercialization of these systems, with key patented technologies incorporated into the Dragon series of ultrafast lasers. At CLEO/QELS, KMLabs will discuss the rationale behind implementing cryogenic cooling in ultrafast laser systems, and the current and future prospects of this technology. Examples of systems recently developed by KMLabs will be exhibited that operate with performance parameters that far exceed past technologies: a system capable of producing >6 mJ pulse energy at 5 kHz (up to 32 W average power), with pulses of 23-fs duration, and a compact, single-stage system operating at repetition rates of up to 20 kHz, with 300-µJ pulse energy.
