Available from Specialised Imaging Ltd. are multihead xenon flashlamps for use with ultrafast cameras that have short recording times. The SIL 500 Joule lamps generate high-intensity illumination in 2-ms pulses that can be controlled and synchronized to match the time frame of an event being recorded. Housed in a rugged package, they operate on the principle that electrical energy is stored in large capacitors and released on command into a flash tube to create a high-energy luminous discharge. Xenon produces a spectral output that has energies at virtually all visible wavelengths. The company says that the flashlamps use little energy and produce negligible heat. The lifetime of the flash tube is thousands of hours.
