A new image simulation feature in Code V 9.7 from Optical Research Associates (ORA) makes it easier for optical system designers to visualize overall performance and to communicate design trade-offs to nonoptical personnel. Specifically, a new two-dimensional image simulation function models how an object would appear when imaged by the optical system, taking into account diffraction, lens aberrations, distortion, relative illumination and even blurring due to detector pixel size. This function also determines image orientation for complex folded systems.

Using the power of the fast-Fourier transform calculation, 2-D image simulation delivers much more efficient and accurate results than geometrical ray-blasting techniques, ORA said. To use 2-D image simulation, an original “object” is simply presented to the software as a BMP image file, and the calculated “image” is then displayed. Results can then be saved in BMP, JPEG or PNG format.

Code V 9.7 also offers expanded functionality in several other areas. For example, an enhanced 1-D partial coherence function facilitates the design of microlithography optics and other systems that rely on partial coherence. The addition of a Gaussian quadrature radial grid for defining ray sets speeds optimization of systems that have circular or vignetted circular pupils. The software also features an expanded array of performance metrics and plots for quantifying optical system performance.
