8-W Fiber-Coupled Laser Module

BERLIN, Germany, May 4, 2007 -- Lumics' LU0915T080 fiber-coupled laser module, based on its new chip generation technology, uses up to 8-W output power at 915-nm pump wavelength and exhibits more than 60 percent electrical-to-optical power conversion efficiency. Applications include ytterbium fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers.

Lumics introduced the chip-generation laser diode device in an uncooled TO220 package fiber coupled with a 105/125µm multimode fiber. The laser diode has just a 22 x 11 mm footprint, including a 2.7-mm screw hole for mounting to a heat sink. The modules can be air-cooled with standard heat-sink components for the popular TO220 footprint.

The package design is used as a platform for a series of high-power single-emitter laser diodes at 808, 915 , 940 and 975 nm pump wavelength with an excellent cost/performance ratio, Lumics said. Lifetime is specified as 100.000h MTTF.

The complete module assembly is based on fully automated active fiber alignment technology. Production is ISO 9001-approved, with several screening steps throughout the chip manufacturing and module assembly process.

The module has a typical operating current of 9A, a very low maximum 1.8-V forward voltage, 0.22 or 0.15 numerical aperture, and 500- mA threshold current. (The laser diode is isolated to the ground.) 

Lumics will exhibit at LASER-World of Photonics (Booth B1-129), June 18-21 in Munich, Germany.
