Night Vision System-Compatible
RONKONKOMA, N.Y., May 21, 2007 -- Apollo Display Technologies said it has developed a method to make LED-backlit TFT LCDs compatible with night-vision imaging systems which furnishes VGA-and XGA-resolution TFT LCDs (thin-film transistor liquid crystal displays) backlit by LED rails that can switch between day and night mode. The company said the method eliminates cumbersome and expensive filters -- large glass overlays bonded to the outside of the display -- that are typically used.

nightvis.jpgTwo versions are available: NVIS A for upper-echelon applications and NVIS B for applications with less stringent requirements. Apollo has produced an 8.4-in. diagonal NVIS-compatible LCD that will be scalable up to 15-in. diagonal. The LCDs can be used in night-vision displays in military aircraft cockpits, tanks, trucks, ground-mobile applications, communications equipment, electronics and a variety of other applications.

“These are multitasking displays that can be used in day or night environments,” said Richard McKay, Apollo Display Technologies LLC managing director. “This approach has never been done before. It requires no change of the factory mechanicals, keeps part count down and is easy and more economical to implement than existing solutions.”

The key to Apollo’s approach is its addressable LED rails, he said. "Coated CCFL lamps have been tried but, they negatively impact the appearance of the display in daytime mode. Apollo’s LED rails have separate day and night mode functions built into them."

The LCDs are addressable via the company’s standard Prisma II industrial controller board and are powered by its white LED constant-current driver board. All of its LCDs are ROHS-compliant.
