SpectrEcology LLC has released smart cuvettes that measure pH and pO2. Compatible with any spectrophotometer, the pHuvette is a proprietary nanomaterial optical pH sensor embedded in the wall of a standard 1-cm cuvette to trap bromcresol green pH indicator ions in a hydrophilic sol-gel cage. The pHoxyvette cuvette has an embedded oxygen sensor. Hydrophobic sol gel traps a ruthenium fluorescent compound, and oxygen is determined via phase fluorimetry to measure the fluorescence quenching. The company offers the cuvettes in a 1-cm disposable version, or it can install the sensors in any transparent container wall. The sensors can measure respiration rates, biological or chemical oxygen demand, water quality and the gaseous environments of sealed systems such as CO2 lasers.
