Spectrum Analyser Extends Farther into Infrared

Yokogawa_T&M_AQ6375.jpgYokogawa Europe BV presents the AQ6375, a benchtop optical spectrum analyser covering the wavelength range from 1200 to 2400 nm. Based on optical spectrum measurement technologies for the communications wavelength range, it can measure the spectrum of near-infrared lasers as well as supercontinuum sources.

Laser absorption spectroscopy is drawing a lot of attention and is being actively developed as a method for detecting small concentrations of gas molecules; e.g., in the context of investigating the environmental damage these might cause. Until now, mainly large-scale spectrometers have been used to measure near-infrared laser emissions in the 2-μm wavelength band. But because of issues with measurement resolution, measurement speed, operability and maintainability, requests have been made for an optical spectrum analyser that is smaller and has better performance.

The device can measure optical spectra from 1.2 to 2.4 μm, so it covers not only the wavelength range for laser absorption spectroscopy but also the 1.31- to 1.55-μm wavelengths used in communications. It offers settable wavelength resolution between 0.05 and 2.0 nm and a minimum sensitivity of –70 dBm.

A proprietary sweep technique supports faster sweeps than monochromator-based systems deliver, and the maximum sweep time for a 100-nm span is only 0.5 s. Fast command and data processing are enabled by the microprocessor, and an Ethernet interface provides up to 100 times faster data transfer speed than the also included GPIB interface. Both a large internal storage for >5000 traces and an interface for USB storage and data transfer are available. A built-in calibrator eliminates troublesome calibration steps, and development of external analysis software is no longer required.
