Software Upgrade Facilitates Picosecond Correlation

PicoQuant GmbH has released a new programming library, version 2.2, to support the latest hardware enhancements in its PicoHarp 300 time-correlated single-photon-counting system. The software-controlled system has applications in fluorescence lifetime imaging, fluorescence decay measurement, and in picosecond coincidence correlation in single-molecule spectroscopy and general quantum physics.

The new version provides software-driver support for the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. It upgrades the instrument’s time-tagged time-resolved (TTTR) mode, which captures all photons or other events as precisely timed individual records. There are four external mark- er inputs for recording the exact timing of other processes as part of the TTTR mode data stream, and this provides synchronization with existing imaging devices such as laser scanning microscopes. The software library provides efficient access to the USB 2.0 interface that connects the PicoHarp hardware to a computer, sustaining a TTTR mode throughput of 5-M counts per second. PicoHarp has a new time digitizer with 4-ps resolution and a processing rate of up to 10 million counts per second. The software allows users to exploit the new identical synchronized but independent input channels. This facilitates coincidence correlation with picosecond resolution. The high timing resolution allows users to combine the PicoHarp with high-resolution detectors such as microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes.

The software is compatible with third-party applications such as LabView and Matlab, and with C, C++, Delphi and Visual Basic programming languages. It comes with a large set of sample application source codes as an aid to program developers. Existing owners of the programming library can apply for the new version free of charge.
