Large-Core Fibres Transmit Lots of Light

AMS Technologies AG is offering a family of large-core multimode optical fibres from Fiberguide Industries Inc. The SPCH (Superguide polymer clad hard) UV-VIS and Anhydroguide APCH (anhydrous polymer clad hard) VIS-IR have a hard polymer cladding to increase strength and to guard against fibre breakage. These fibres align well and produce high transmission in laser delivery systems, in short- to medium-distance data communications, in factory automation, in near-IR spectroscopy, and in optical pyrometry and automotive cabling.

The fibres have a numerical aperture of 0.39 (±0.02) and a full-acceptance angle of 46°, and they operate over a broad range of wavelengths. The SPCH fibre operates from 210 to 1200 nm, with a maximum attenuation of 3 dB/km at 650 nm and of 10 dB/km at 1060 nm. The APCH operates from 550 to 2100 nm and may attenuate by up to 5 dB/km at 810 nm and up to 6 dB/km at 1062 nm. Both types operate in temperatures from –60 to 125 °C, and they are certified to pressures of up to 100 kpsi. Core diameters range from 200 to 1500 μm, with maximum core/clad offsets of 5 and 15 μm, respectively. The biggest core carries up to 11.3-kW continuous-wave power and up to 56.6-MW pulsed. The large cores and high degree of concentricity enable high connection alignment and fibre core positioning and lead to better transmission.

The hard polymer cladding dissolves in acetone, enabling the user to customize end designs easily and at low cost. Silica clad fibres also are available with a high core-to-clad ratio.
