Affymetrix Inc. has introduced Cytogenic Solution, a microarray-based product for detecting chromosomal abnormalities associated with congenital diseases such as autism and mental retardation. It combines the high-density SNP Array 6.0 with a copy number assay and the Genotyping Console 2.1 software, and it requires only two steps — preparing the DNA and analyzing the data. The company said that the system provides advantages over traditional cytogenetic approaches because a single sample applied to an array can provide information on copy number and loss of heterozygosity on a genomewide level.
