arcoptix.jpgArcspectro HT-2D, manufactured by Arcoptix SA, is a stationary Fourier transform spectrometer that covers the spectral range from 400 to 1100 nm and that delivers 1.7-, 5- and 10-nm FWHM spectral resolution at 400, 700 and 1000 nm, respectively. The USB 2.0 spectrometer employs a CMOS silicon 2-D detector array with 1280 × 1024 pixels and polarization optics using birefringent crystals that render the device highly sensitive. It can record spectra in as little as 0.05 ms, with dark noise as low as 0.02 counts.

Measuring 60 × 60 × 80 mm and weighing 300 g, it delivers resolution of 2 nm at 550 nm. The company says that the throughput is ∼100 times higher than that of conventional grating spectrometers, making the device suitable for measurement of low-light diffuse sources, as in fluorescence or diffuse reflection spectroscopy, and applications with minimum measurement times of only 0.05 ms are possible.

Because of its 2-D 1.3-megapixel CMOS camera, the spectrometer averages >1000 measurements in a single shot, providing a 3000:1 signal-to-noise ratio at short integration times. It can be used in simple optical setups and does not require fibres or focussing optics. The user can directly illuminate the 4-mm-diameter entrance opening with the light to be spectrally analysed or can bring the light to the system with fibre bundles. Its design enables collection of light over large angles, and its entrance surface measures several millimetres. The principle upon which it operates prevents drift and dark noise.

Packaged in a metallic anodized housing with fixation treads, the system offers variable gain and contains no moving parts. Relative wavelength accuracy and repeatability are <0.01 nm, with absolute wavelength accuracy of <0.5 nm. Readout time is 40 ms, operating temperature is from 10 to 50 °C, and power consumption is <1 W. It has a Windows XP software interface.
