Innolume.jpgInnolume has introduced its semiconductor InnoComb, a diode laser that emits tens to hundreds of pure low-noise colours (comb spectrum) from a single laser cavity. Powered by the device, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems can be harnessed for low-cost short-reach computer interconnects. The company has reduced the relative intensity noise of each spectral line, offering increased integration and functionality at a reduced size and cost and using cavity resonance with quantum dot gain behaviour to replace integrated laser arrays. The comb laser simplifies system design because all channels move in unison with shifting temperature.

The InnoComb is a single Fabry-Perot laser that emits many lines/wavelengths/channels (longitudinal cavity modes) with virtually the same power on each. It has demonstrated 10 mW of power per channel over 16 channels and >1 mW per channel over 100 channels. Channel spacing is available from <50 to 140 GHz (<0.28 to 0.8 nm) centred at any wavelength from 1250 to 1320 nm (O-band). For data communications, the comb laser’s channels are demultiplexed, modulated externally at $10 Gb/s and multiplexed for single-fibre transmission.
