Cobolt.jpgCobolt AB has released the Cobolt Fandango, a CW solid-state laser operating at a fixed wavelength of 515 nm and with an output power of 50 mW. Built on the proprietary diode-pumped solid-state platform, the single longitudinal-mode laser offers low noise (<0.3% rms), a narrow spectral bandwidth (typically <30 MHz) and high beam quality (M2 <1.1) over a temperature range of 10 to 40 °C, in a compact, hermetically sealed package. The full system typically consumes less than 25 W of electrical power. The 515-nm model is a replacement for argon-ion lasers for use in fluorescence analysis applications, such as spinning-disc confocal microscopy and high-speed plate reading. It is particularly useful for the excitation of yellow fluorescent protein and of the Alexa Fluor 514 and Oregon Green dyes. The laser controller is available in a Center for Devices and Radiological Health version and as an ultracompact remotely controllable OEM model.
