SensL.jpgThe SPMScint silicon photomultiplier for radiation detection is available from SensL. The solid-state detector has applications in nuclear medicine, environmental monitoring, and in x-ray and nuclear radiation detection. Sensitive to single photons, the device consists of an array of Geiger mode avalanche photodiodes, each one coupled to integrated quench electronics. Available in two models, it offers high gain (106), rise time of <5 ns, low bias voltage operation (30 V), a dark count rate of 5 to 10 MHz, a sensitive area of 1 or 9 mm2 and two microcell sizes, 20 and 35 μm. It is housed in a TO5 package and covered with a 300-μm layer of transparent epoxy resin. The detector surface can be placed <1 mm from an emitting surface of a scintillation crystal. Tests have demonstrated an energy resolution of 12.5% at 511 KeV with a 3 × 3 × 15 mm3 LSO crystal.
