Q-switched DPSS laser
Newport Corp.'s Spectra-Physics Lasers Division has announced the Hippo 532-14, a new addition to its Hippo family of Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) industrial lasers. The device provides 14 W of 532-nm output at 100 kHz with a short pulse width of <30ns. Used for solar thin-film scribing applications, it is suitable for high-speed multibeam scribing of P2 and P3 layers in thin-film a-Si and CdTe photovoltaic structures. Scribe speeds in excess of 12 m per second have been achieved on tandem-junction a-Si P2 layers with isolation lines approximately 65 µm wide and approximately 2.5 µm deep.
The green laser comprises an IR laser engine and a plug-and-play 532-nm harmonic module, and it is designed for 24/7 operation, low maintenance and easy field serviceability. Its short pulse width and high peak power of up to16 kW at 50 kHz help to reduce undesired thermal effects such as heat-affected zones, material recast and micro-cracking of the substrate. The high pulse-to-pulse stability at higher pulse repetition rates translates into good scribe consistency at high processing speeds on solar panels.
Repetition rate is from 30 to 250 kHz, horizontal polarization is >100:1, full-angle beam divergence is <1.2 mrad, beam ellipticity is <10%, beam pointing stability is <±50 µrad, and pulse-to-pulse stability is <5% rms. Operating temperature is from 18 to 35 °C.
The TEM00 beam profile and M2 <1.3 beam quality result in a larger depth of field, making the laser more forgiving of variations in glass substrate flatness and surface irregularities. With proprietary EternAlign permanent optics mounting technology and field-replaceable key components such as diodes, fibers and harmonic modules, the modular laser is rugged and inexpensive to operate.
