Optical Encoder
The Mercury II 5000 manufactured by MicroE Systems is a miniature high-resolution optical encoder that provides motion system designers with good performance, accuracy, versatility, ease of use and low cost of ownership. Designed for next-generation precision manufacturing, inspection, metrology and medical equipment, its good short-range accuracy (cyclic error) of up to ±20 nm ensures smooth velocity control.

MicroESystems_MercuryII5000.jpgResolution is programmable and ranges from 5µm to 1.2 nm, linear, meeting a wide range of requirements. High-speed applications are supported by new, faster A-quad-B output, providing up to 5 m/s at 0.1-µm resolution and a maximum speed of 10 m/s. The encoder’s compact sensor measures only 11 mm high, enabling smaller, faster motion systems.

All electronics are integrated in the sensor, including programmable interpolation. This enables digital output right from the sensor with no electronics in the connector, providing users with high system reliability, a small footprint, fast system integration and a variety of connector options, including customer-specific configurations.

Setup of the optical system is fast and requires minimal skill. Rotational tolerance about the Z-axis is ±2°, and ride height tolerance is ±0.15 mm.

The adhesive-mount PurePrecision tape scales are designed for accuracy, robustness and rapid installation. The proprietary PurePrecision system allows the installer to cut any required length from a reel. Adhesive backing and an application tool do the rest, making installation fast and accurate. Linear glass scales accommodate applications that require high long-range accuracy of up to ±1 μm.
The tape scale system addresses the requirement for an index that can be placed anywhere. The encoder features a stick-on optical index and limits. The index is bi-directional and provides 1 LSB repeatability at all speeds, while fail-safe left and right optical limits enhance safety and reduce cabling. Applications include assembly automation, automated optical inspection, metrology, medical and life sciences equipment, and microscope stages.
