Infinera.jpgTo introduce photonic integration to undersea networks, Infinera has adapted its DTN dense wavelength division multiplexing system to accommodate the submarine market. Used as submarine line terminating equipment, the system is deployed at cable head end sites, enabling undersea service providers to upgrade existing submarine networks and double bandwidth capacity. Benefits include cutting deployment times by up to 83% and improving space utilization by up to 95%, according to the company. Features include up to 100 Gb/s of photonic integrated circuit-based multiwavelength capacity in a single circuit pack, capacity of up to 160 wavelengths on a fiber, and high-gain forward error correction that ensures end-to-end system operation at a guaranteed bit error rate <10–15 across the network. Semiconductor optical amplifiers have been added to provide transoceanic optical reach.
