Leica Microsystems GmbH has announced the SCN400 slide scanner as an alternative to the microscope for examining histological samples. The custom-tailored lens for a digital sensor ensures that the resolution and color fidelity of the image on the screen are as good as they are with a traditional microscope. The system can load and scan up to four specimens at a time with a scanning rate of 100 s per 15 × 15 mm at 20× magnification. Users can load new samples or remove finished scans without interruption, and once a sample has been digitized, it can be retrieved, processed and made available to a defined group of users in a database. Applications include pathology, research and teaching.
