BEAVERTON, Ore., April 5, 2010 — Voxtel Inc. has announced the release of a near-infrared avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver with 1-GHz bandwidth and a large 200-µm-diameter optical area. Suitable for laser rangefinder, laser designator, free-space optical communications, optical instrumentation and ladar/lidar applications, it is the latest entry in the company’s Siletz line of back-illuminated single-carrier multiplication avalanche photodiode (SCM-APD) products.

The receiver integrates the low-excess-noise SCM-APD with a low-noise transimpedance amplifier. The NIR/SWIR (short wavelength infrared) APDs have an equivalent ionization coefficient (keff) of <0.02 and enable the receiver to operate at high avalanche gain, boosting the optical signal over the amplifier noise level without the degrading effects of avalanche-induced excess noise.

The ultralow excess noise and high gain make the photoreceivers highly sensitive, offering a maximum responsivity of >50 A/W at 1550 nm, with operating gain up to 50. Typical wavelength range is from 1064 to 1550 nm, maximum dark current is 195 kV/W, typical low-frequency cutoff is 65 kHz, and thermal load is 83 mW.

A single-stage thermoelectric cooler is included to eliminate temperature-induced gain variation and allow optimal performance over a range of application environments. The receiver is available with optional fiber pigtail input and a variety of standard fiber connectors.
