The N-Driver system from Armstrong Optical Ltd. increases road and rail safety, enhancing driver visibility under all weather and lighting conditions.
The easily installed thermal imaging system offers optimum resolution, a fast frame rate and a good field of view and can act as a driver’s "third eye" to improve the driving experience. It is estimated that more than 50% of all fatal accidents occur on roads in darkness and that collisions at night would decrease by almost 60% if drivers could react 0.5 s earlier (equating to ~15-m additional reaction distance at 100 km/hr).
The thermal imaging drivers’ aid overcomes blinding by oncoming headlights, provides earlier warning of hidden obstacles and pedestrians in the roadway and, by increasing situational awareness, helps in preventing serious and fatal accidents. It detects people at distance of more than 600 m and vehicles and distance of greater than 1 km.
The system is ready to operate on start-up and provides high-resolution imagery in a format that aids driving but does not overwhelm the driver with too much information. It operates at a full 50-Hz frame rate, ensuring that no blind-spots occur during refresh periods.
In addition to road and rail safety, the system is finding applicability in areas such as marine travel, and general fixed and mobile position security and surveillance.
