BaySpec Inc.’s RamSpec series high-resolution long-wave 1064-nm compact Raman system is designed for high performance, long-term reliability and ultralow fluorescence interference for measurement of biological samples such as tissue and skin.

The third-generation rugged dispersive Raman instrument uses low-cost field-proven components and an efficient volume phase grating (VPG) as the spectral dispersion element and an ultrasensitive InGaAs array detector as the detection element, thereby providing high-speed parallel processing and continuous spectrum measurements.

As an input, the device uses a fiber optic bundle or slit optics arrangement, based on customer preferences. The signal is spectrally dispersed with the VPG, and the diffracted light is focused onto the InGaAs array detector. The control electronics read out the processed digital signal to extract required information. Both the raw data and the processed data are available to the end user.

Features include self-automated wavelength calibration, ~5-cm-1 spectral resolution in the entire 1064-nm Raman wavelength region and rapid automated calibration to ensure operational accuracy. The system identifies both commonplace and rare chemicals through glass, plastic, transparent and translucent materials, and it performs qualitative as well as quantitative analysis. It helps reduce the likelihood of human error by eliminating sample preparation and test interpretation, and performs nondestructive testing to preserve samples for additional tests and/or as evidence.

The system performs real-time spectral data acquisition with millisecond response times and provides stable fiber laser illumination. The deep-cooled f/1.8 camera enables low-light detection, and the coaxial small-form-factor Raman probe with internal filters and coatings suppresses unwanted light signals. The system includes the camera, a spectrograph, a laser, the probe, a swivel notebook computer and Micro 2020 Windows-based software for turnkey operation.

Signal-to-noise ratio is 6000:1, stray light is 0.05%, integration time is from 20 ms to 300 s, and power consumption is <25 W.

Applications include scientific research, in vivo and in vitro medical, forensics, drug screening, mineralogy, petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals.
