The Lumen 200 fluorescence illumination system from Prior Scientific Inc. employs a 200-W metal arc lamp that lasts 2000 h. The lamp is precentered for easy installation. The light can be connected to a microscope through a 2- or an optional 3-m lightguide that minimizes thermal drift because it is composed of liquid and is separate from the microscope. The DC power supply eliminates light flicker that can occur with AC. The Lumen 200 Pro also features a motorized, six-position, 25-mm-diameter filter wheel and a motorized, variable-aperture shutter that attenuates light to reduce photodamage and photobleaching. The filter wheel revolves in 55 ms, and the shutter goes from open to closed in 20 ms.
