COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Nov. 16, 2010 — Ibsen Photonics has announced the release of the I-MON 850 interrogation monitors for real-time spectrum monitoring of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors in the 850-nm wavelength range.

High sensitivity enables high resolution at low light levels, and an option for 15-kHz line-scan frequency enables fast measurements. With a USB or an IEEE1394a FireWire interface and data acquisition software, they provide easy set up with a laptop and can act as stand-alone monitors in combination with a user-selected light source. They integrate easily with the user’s interrogation system control printed circuit board, and external trigger input enables exact timing.

The FireWire version has a maximum of 25 FBG sensors and measurement frequency of 14,600 Hz, and it operates from 835 to 865 nm. The USB version has 40 sensors and measurement frequency of 15 Hz, and it operates from 825 to 875 nm. Both models offer minimum FBG spacing of 1200 pm, resolution of <0.5 pm, maximum repeatability of 5 pm over any polarization state, typical wavelength linearity of 3 pm, maximum wavelength drift of 3 pm/°C and an input optical power range of -80 to -20 dBm.

The robust and athermal monitors are built on proprietary and patented high-resolution spectrometer technology, using the company’s fused silica transmission gratings. They split the wavelength spectrum spatially to allow for parallel processing of the individual FBG sensor peaks, which are measured by a diode array. They are available as a developer’s kit, including software that provides plug-and-play operation, and driver software packages and DLL files allow users to develop their own measurement applications for OEM integration.

Applications include temperature and strain measurements, pressure monitoring and vibration analysis.
